Izumo Ōyashiro / Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine 出雲大社

Izumo Ōyashiro is one of the oldest and most important shrines in Japan. It is also called Izumo Taisha or Taisha-san.

Hinomisaki Jinja/Shrine 日御碕神社

The brightly painted vermillion shrine honors both Amaterasu and Susano-o. The road there runs along the coast and has unforgettable ocean views.

Izumo Hinomisaki Lighthouse 出雲日御碕灯台

It is the tallest masonry historical lighthouse in Japan and was selected as one of the top 100 historic lighthouses in the world.

Kyu Taisha Eki 旧大社駅

Currently under renovation, this historic landmark is set to open to the public later this year (Dec 20, 2025). We'll let you know when you can come see the beautifully restored architecture!

Inasa-no-Hama (Inasa Beach) 稲佐の浜

This beach is an important setting in several legends from “The Kojiki,” and continues to play an important role in Shinto rituals to this day. Inasa no Hama is a sandy beach just 1km west from Izumo Taisha.

Tachikue-kyo (Gorge) 立久恵峡

The best spot for an hour-long hike in any season. Visitors will be able to find many little Buddhist jizo statues in the forest as well as Buddhist temples and breathtaking cliffs.

Usagi 鵜鷺

Usagi is a quaint harbor village that preserves traditional architecture from yesteryear, and provides a quiet atmosphere for relaxation and recreation.

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo 古代出雲歴史博物館

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo will be closed from April 2025 to September 2026 (tentative) for renovation.

Ichibata Electric Railway 一畑電車

Ichibata trains provide Shimane-themed transportation to important tourist areas. They are also a relaxing way to enjoy the scenic Izumo countryside.

Kitajima Kokusokan 北島国造館

Located east of Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine, here you can find tranquility touring the grounds, pond, a waterfall, shrines, gates, and other structures.

Ichibata Yakushi (Temple) 一畑薬師

A Buddhist temple that produces tea that is used in ceremonies and can be taken home.

Momen Kaido Cotton Road 木綿街道

Walk down this street to travel back in time and enjoy cafes, restaurants, breweries, shops and hotels in historic buildings. The oldest date back to the 1700s!

Susa Jinja/Shrine 須佐神社

The enshrined deity is Susano-o no Mikoto. There is a cedar tree behind the shrine said to be over 1,300 years old and an important power spot.

Shussai Gama (Shussai Kiln) 出西窯

This is a unique place where you can see and purchase pottery made by hand and fired in a special “climbing kiln” (nobori-gama).

Saka Jinja/Shrine 佐香神社

This shrine is said to be the origin of sake brewing. A sake festival is held once a year on October 13th.

Gakuenji (Temple) 鰐淵寺

This Buddhist temple is an excellent place to enjoy mountain scenery at any time of year, but is particularly famous for its fall foliage.
