WHAT TO SEE

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo 古代出雲歴史博物館

Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo will be closed from April 2025 to September 2026 (tentative) for renovation.

This museum will spark your curiosity and imagination as it gives you a better understanding of the Izumo region’s history and culture.

Although records talk about the height of the legendary Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine when it was the tallest building in Japan, we don’t know what it actually looked like. At the museum, you can see several different models of what pilgrims of yesteryear might have seen. The excavated pillar remains from that time period are also on display.

Many other displays, including an exhibit about the Izumo Fudoki, the only complete gazetteer from that period of Japan’s history to survive intact, and the information we have learned from it about Izumo of over 1,300 years ago are very informative.

Legends from historical and mythological texts the “Kojiki” and “Izumo Fudoki” come to life in a theater that shows actors playing the roles of the kami. Foreign language summaries are available from staff upon request.

What wonders will the museum prepare for us during the remodel? We’ll let you know as soon as we find out!

In the meantime, the museum plans to have occasional events during the closure, so be sure to check during your visit to see if there is an opportunity for you to participate!
