A Buddhist temple that produces tea that is used in ceremonies and can be taken home.
Located at the top of Mt. Ichibata, about 300 meters above sea level, Ichibata Yakushi Temple has amazing views of the surrounding area. It was founded during the Heian period, when a fisherman found a statue of the Yakushi Nyorai Buddha from the Sea of Japan and it cured his mother’s blindness after a test of his faith. The fisherman built the first structure for the Buddha, then trained to become a priest himself.
Over the centuries, it has gained popularity as a place of prayer for feudal lords and common folk alike. While assistance with eye ailments is what this temple is most famous for, it is also associated with strong and healthy growth of children and other blessings.
Visitors can choose what kind of experience they wish to have at Ichibata Yakushi, whether they want to climb the 1,300 steps leading up the mountain, participate in a tour and meditation practice, stay in the Ichibata-yama Cottage accommodation on the temple grounds, or just try the tea and enjoy the view.
