It is the tallest masonry historical lighthouse in Japan and was selected as one of the top 100 historic lighthouses in the world.
The 43.65-meter-high structure was built in 1903, and is the tallest stone lighthouse in Japan. Visitors can climb the 163 steps to the lighthouse observatory and enjoy the view of the glorious natural scenery in 360 degrees (small admission fee required). There is also a small museum at the base that is free of charge, where visitors can learn more about lighthouses.
The natural landscape around the lighthouse is worth taking time to walk around. For geology enthusiasts, this area is a must-see. Past volcanic activity created columnar jointing resulting in pentagonal and hexagonal rock formations and a mostly inaccessible coastline, which have left local ecosystems largely intact. The area around Hinomisaki lighthouse is home to various birds, including black kites (called “tombi” by locals) and black-tailed gulls (“umi-neko” in Japanese). The gulls nest on the nearby Fumishima Island (which roughly translates to “sutra island,” as the rocks resemble clustered scrolls standing on end) in April and May before migrating north for the summer.
Gorgeous at any time of year.
